Oil

Still Life

29.5 H x 19.5 W x 1 D in

This striking painting is much more than just a still life: it is a celebration of Ukrainian identity, traditions, and the enduring warmth of home. Executed in a powerful impasto technique, with multi-textured layers of oil paint applied in bold, energetic brushstrokes, the work embodies the spirit of contemporary Ukrainian expressionism.

At the center of the composition are dark glass vessels reminiscent of traditional homemade infusions and village gatherings, surrounded by sunflowers—Ukraine’s most recognizable national symbol—and bright red peppers, which have long been associated with rural life, hospitality, and folk culture. Together, these elements create a visual language deeply rooted in the Ukrainian countryside, while remaining unmistakably contemporary in its execution.

The thick, sculptural surface of the paint gives the work an almost three-dimensional appearance. Light seems to burst forth from within the canvas, illuminating golden earth tones, rich crimson accents, and deep cobalt shadows. Each brushstroke carries movement, emotion, and authenticity, transforming familiar cultural objects into symbols of resilience, memory, and belonging.
