About the artwork
Southern sea otters were once hunted almost to extinction for their pelts. At about a million hairs per square inch, nothing felt more luxurious back in the fur trading days. Southern sea otters have no blubber and live in the very cold water of the Monterey Bay. These dense coats trap air and keep them warm. They are often seen with their paws and feet out of the water as another way to maintain heat. This little otter was grooming and resting in the Elkhorn Slough, Moss Landing, California.Medium Details
