About the artwork

Imagine her...in a foyer of an estate. . .covered exterior garden/patio. . .Greek or Italian restaurant. . .lobby of a lovely hotel. . .her luxurious robes, poised elegance, and relaxed aura setting a welcoming and classy stage. Musings of a Muse is Polyhymnia, an ancient Greek and Roman muse of sacred song and dance, inspired by a 2nd Century A.D. marble sculpture at the Museo Centrale Montemartini in Rome that sang to me upon first sight "Polly," as my sculpture studio mates and I nicknamed her, impresses with lines, angles, and New Age serenity, one of several works in my Goddess Eternal series as part of an umbrella theme of my works here, Ancient is Modern, Modern is Ancient, which translates abstract art techniques of color, geometry, texture, shape, line, form, and pattern of bygone eras into contemporary aesthetic and sensibility. (My Cave Art and Southwestern Landscapes series fall under this umbrella theme as well.) During 775 hours over 14 months, I labored to capture a regal, serene, and magnetic aura in a classical antiquity stone look.  The process was often discordant.  Building the solid framework structure with blocks of terracotta clay.  Molding the shapes and forms.  Rebuilding after cutting her up to hollow out the inside in preparation for firing in the kiln.  Sanding.  The final touches: dry wash brush painting with white over a tranquil blue-grey acrylic base coat on the fired clay sculpture. All to strike the right notes.  Flowing folds.  Dreamy eyes.  Pillar with geometric angles.  Classic grandeur.  Is Polly singing to you? Polly comes with a felt bottom to protect flooring from scratching, though she might be more effectively displayed if propped on a 12- to 18-inch-high pedestal.
