About the artwork
This vessel is made of maple wood using the segmented technique involving the cutting of segments which are glued together into rings and the rings are stacked and glues together into a rough shape of the vessel. It is then put on a wood lathe where it is shaped using wood turning tools. Once the vessel has the form that is desired the artist attached small pieces of Zebra Wood to add an interesting and textural dimension to the wood turning. The top rim is made of hard maple which has been ebonized or blackened to provide an additional accent to the piece. The vessel is then finished with 5 coats of clear lacquer to bring out the grain of the wood and provide protection for the piece.
