About the artwork

This vessel is made of wood, in this case Bubinga and Maple. It is made using the segmenting technique involving the cutting of individual segments with a specific angle at each end which are glued together to form rings and the rings are stacked and glues together into a rough shape of the vessel. It is then put on a wood lathe where it is shaped using wood turning tools. Once the vessel has the form that is desired it is beaded using a small tool that cuts a shallow semicircle bead around the circumference of the piece. When beading is complete a black line is burned in the valley between each bead. The beads in this piece are 3/16" in diameter. The next step in the process involves the burning of vertical lines to form the individual rectangles that give the illusion of beading. When the vessel is completed to this point you know how many beads are in the vessel and can start designing the pattern for the piece. The designing is done using a graph paper type grid. The design must fit on the vessel precisely. The pattern is then copied onto the wood vessel using India ink pens. India ink is color fast. archival grade coloring. Once the pattern has been rendered onto the vessel it is given 5 to 6 coats of lacquer. Each piece is signed by the artist, dated and numbered.
