About the artwork
I can sit and ponder the casts in my still life prop collection for hours, weaving stories about what they symbolize and the narratives they can tell in paintings. For years, this painting concept swirled around in my head before it got painted. Sometimes paintings are like that. They have a life of their own and demand to be created.
My thoughts when I was painting It's a Jungle Out There were about the excitement and possibilities that rally when life gets lifey. Nobody wants to deal with the truths of illness, loss, mortality, financial ruin, addiction, matters of the heart, etc. We all turn away from the negative until we just can't anymore. We muster our courage and face the situations head on. And there's always a dark horse in the background if we need to dig deep and find even more bravery.
There is such beauty in this struggle. I don't want to experience the hurt, but I can't stop looking at it. We all survive hardships, and life takes no prisoners. But there is a warmth to balance the coolness. There are bright times to balance the dark ones. There is a female energy to balance the masculine. Hope springs eternal.
This painting was in the Poe and Puck art show at the Mansion at Strathmore in MD, the One Love exhibit in Manassas, VA, the Southwest Art of the Heartland in Mena, AR, the Jones Gallery KC show in Kansas City, MO. It has seen some things I wonder what it would share if it could talk.
