I’m attracted to subjects that appear to have stories to tell. They’re typically well-worn like a favorite pair of jeans, compelling me to imagine them in their heyday, which inspires me to romanticize them in my paintings.
In “No Vacancy,” I’m captivated by the Patio Motel’s colorful, midcentury modern neon sign, working hard for many years, attracting patrons. Here, it’s depicted still doing its job as we can see the “No” in No Vacancy lit in its glorious red neon.
