About the artwork

This piece has a few lines from a love poem by an unknown author (perhaps a student?) - top left corner: "your smile lights up the darkest night, you lift me up when I am low, you give me strength, you make me smile..."
Mid right side is a summary of a text from "A Survey of French Literature" about Victor Hugo and his life, who was one of the most important French Romantic writers. "Swinburne called him the greatest writer since Shakespeare and the greatest Frenchman of all time, and compared one of his books to the effort of God creating the springtime...." "He was the son of an army officer who rose, under Napoleon, to be Lieutenant-General. Military assignment took the family to Corsica, Italy, Spain; the impressionable boy was fascinated by the exotic color and life of the southern islands...."
