About the artwork

Brevity is an allegorical still life that depicts the brief span of the life of an artist. The plaster cast of the artist's face is the lifetime of the artist; a snapshot in time during a period of youth, but is also reminiscent of a death mask with eyes closed and laying down. The sculpture is a symbol of the artist's work, an incomplete figure. This conveys that the full extent of the artist's ability and output is never reached, but will eventually be cut short in death. A lifetime of work remains, set permanently like cast bronze. The art supply boxes, once used daily, now sit stacked and closed. These are reminders that the artist's unique processes, understanding, knowledge and approach will one day be lost to time. The skull with detached mandible is a symbol the artist's death, forever cutting the world off from new expression of the artist's voice. The artwork that is left behind will stand as the artist statement when no artist is left to speak.
