About the artwork

A tempting and delicious trompe l'oeil depiction of gourmet chocolates. In the center of this decadent assembly is a small cropped image of Sir John Everett Millais' famous masterpiece, Ophelia. From Shakespeare's Hamlet, Ophelia was destined to be the wife of Hamlet, but tragically drowned in a brook. Ophelia's affections for Hamlet turned to heartache as Hamlet's pretended madness in a quest for vengeance pushed her to the edge. At her funeral, Queen Gertrude scatters flowers on her grave and bids farewell with the words, "Sweets to the sweet."
