Bio

(b.1951) Rick J. Delanty has been expressing his wonder for God’s creation for five decades in his expressive oil and acrylic landscape paintings, which have been selected for exhibitions across the United States. Shows have included the CAC Gold Medal, Plein Air Salon, and Finalist in the 2021 and 2022 Art Renewal Center Salon, from whom he received designation as Associate Living Master. His book, “Beauty Unites Us,” includes 50 of his contemporary artworks and accompanying inspirational essays. Rick has served as awards judge for several organizations, most recently twice for the Borrego Springs Plein Air national event. In spring 2024 at the Plein Air Convention, Rick was awarded “Best Acrylic” painting in the International Plein Air Salon Competition, winning the same award in spring 2023. Rick earned degrees in English Literature and Studio Drawing and Painting–along with a California teaching credential–at UC Santa Barbara. A teaching career that has spanned more than forty years has instilled in him a lifelong love of learning, with the realization that he will always be a student of the arts and nature. Rick is a Signature member of American Society of Marine Artists, Pacific Rim Institute of Marine Artists, National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society, the American Impressionist Society, and LPAPA, among others. From the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association, he received a Lifetime Achievement award in 2017, has exhibited in a two-man show in the LPAPA Gallery, mentored LCAD students for their own plein air event, and has taught several workshops sponsored by the Association. 2024 was Rick’s 17 th consecutive year as a participating artist in the Laguna Invitational. Recently, he began serving as co-chair of the Orange County Chapter of the California Art Club, facilitating paint-outs and events for members. Four galleries currently represent his work: Illume Gallery in Montana, Waterhouse Galleries in both Santa Barbara and Montecito, California, and most recently Galllery AG in Arroyo Grande.

Artist’s Statement What inspires me about painting the landscape is the physical evidence of God’s supernatural presence in it. His power, creativity, and truth expressed in nature excites me with wonder, mystery, and hope for a better world than man can make. It is the spirit behind the appearance that quickens my heart to paint, to capture the vibrancy of life that may disappear almost as soon as it is apprehended. I know that my life will not be long enough to paint all that I have planned or desire to create. For now, for today, it is enough to work, both inside and out, on the vision that God has given me: to express the beautiful wherever I find it. My job is to express God’s Creation in my own work—and I love doing that.
