Bio

Leslie Ann Hauer returned to painting after career and family, and a journey through a variety of artistic pursuits including ceramics and fiber arts. She lives and works in the semi-arid east side of Washington State. While she has had no formal training, she is an avid student of art and artists. Currently she works primarily in oils.

She finds inspiration in drama in nature, the patterns of light and shadow and moving water. She looks for the details that are often overlooked within the vastness of the Western landscape, the shape of rocks and flowers, the mystery of aging structures.

Leslie has had works accepted in juried shows around the country, including at the WaterWorks Art Museum, Miles City, Montana (awarded “Honorable Mention” for “Contemplating”), the Annual Central Washington Artists Exhibition at Larson Gallery, Yakima Washington, the Wallowa Valley Festival of Arts, Joseph, Oregon, 1st and 2nd Inland Northwest Juried Landscape Art Exhibitions, and the Emerald Spring Exhibition, at the Emerald Art Center, Springfield, Oregon, among others. Her painting “Lostine River Riffle” was awarded “Best Work in Oil” at the 2019 Wallowa Valley Festival of Art Juried Show, “Honorable Mention” for “Swirls” at the Central Washingon Artists Exhibit in 2020, and “Judge’s Choice” for the painting “Passages” at the 2020 “Wild Landscapes” Exhibit at the Josephy Center, both in Joseph, Oregon.

  • Curriculum Vitae

I am drawn to the abstract qualities within the reality of the landscape, the light and shadow, shape and color. I find joy (and frustration) in trying to catch the moment in time while painting en plein air. Some images, some scenes within the landscape, call me to paint. Often that involves details like rocks or flowers, the “little picture” rather than the broad, sometimes overwhelming Western landscape.
