Don Dernovich’s poetic oils and watercolors reflect his love of wildlife and the outdoors. He was born and grew up in Wyoming, where his father taught him to fish and hunt and to respect the land and water. He considers his upbringing the inspiration for his art. Dernovich earned a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts from the University of Wyoming and a Master of Fine Arts from Fort Hays State University in Kansas. He served two years in the Army and worked as an illustrator in Colorado and a coal miner in Wyoming. He has been an art educator in Nebraska and is an award winning artist, including first place in oil at the Phippen Museum Western Art Show, and Best Watercolor at the Western Spirits Art Show. He is a member of the Rocky Mountain Plein Air Painters and a Signature Member of the Oil Painters of America, the National Watercolor Society and the American Watercolor Society. “If my work says something about the beauty we have on this earth or the people who inhabit it, then I feel it is successful,” Dernovich says. To preserve that beauty, he believes in conservation and supports organizations that help sustain land, wildlife, and fisheries. recognitions / memberships publications Return to top of page “Dernovich’s work portrays the quiet backwaters as well as the dramatic panoramas of nature with all the beauties of light and shadow, atmosphere, and season”.
