Kathleen Hope ( b. 1961, Duluth, Mn) is a contemporary abstract and figurative painter. Having spent years as an architectural color consultant, she is very sensitive to color hues. Her work was dependent on finding just the right hues to create the desired emotional atmosphere for a space. She had to know how industrial products would behave in relationship with color. All surface mediums take color differently. This is what lead Hope to choose cement as her medium for art. She starts by applying a thin layer of cement over a wood panel. She then saturates the surface with ink, acrylic, acid and concrete stain. Cement is capable of having a pristine smoothness and wabi-sabi imperfections. It’s porous nature allows colors to permeate the surface and create unusual markings. One of the unique features is the ability to sculpt and pour it to create a raised texture. This unusual medium is what lead her to this eloquent and unique style. Kathleen Hope’s art studio is in Fountain Hills, Az. She shows in 12 galleries across the US and also participates in contemporary art exhibits in London. Her work is featured in many publications such as LUXE Arizona, Western Art and Architecture, Phoenix Home and Garden, Netflix and many others.
