Bio

Early on I realized I could tell a compelling story with a simple drawing using lines and shading on paper to create a powerful emotional connection. I often paint horses. They are social animals with behavior and hierarchies similar to our own. I admire their strength and conversely their timid nature. I am fascinated by this dichotomy. Power and fear are relevant in our own society. It is my thought that it is less that horses’ and animals’ behaviors mirror ours, but more that our behaviors mirror theirs. It is from this point of view that I examine the individual character of each subject I paint. In my portraits of horses, we may perceive something of ourselves.

Soft pastels are the medium I use most often. The versatility of the medium offers me a considerable range of techniques. My work is realistic. While I work from a photo as a starting point, I choose to include, delete, and enhance according to my creative instincts."

Mariposa, California based painter, Christine Obers, creates equine art, working primarily in soft pastel. Her work focuses on the relationships horses have with their humans.

Growing up in Canada, Christine began commissioned oil paintings of landscapes and animals while in her teens. After high school she studied graphic design and illustration at George Brown College in Toronto, Ontario subsequently moving to the US to pursue a career in advertising. Her career as senior art director led to many opportunities to explore her creativity in a multi-faceted way while working for major corporations. In 2009 Obers retired to devote herself to fine art.

For most of her life, Christine has owned horses. She has shown and competed on her horses. Her passion took her to Portugal to study dressage and Ireland to study cross- country. Recently Christine has gone on multiple camping trips riding and packing in with mules in the High Sierra and Baja Sur.

Christine has won numerous international awards including the Master Circle, Gold Medal from the International Association of Pastel Societies and Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America. She is also a Distinguished Pastelist in the Pastel Society of the West Coast and Master Pastelist in the Pastel Artists of Canada Association.
